Sydney & Reno

2020. A reflection.

In life, we’re often walking a plank. 200 feet above the earth.

Gravity doesn’t sink in until we care to look down. Sometimes gravity hits with an unrelenting force that washes through us, only to finally settle in our body as a consistent reminder, felt by us while invisible to others.

We’re running along that plank, to which it knows no end. The 200 feet below us is veiled, hidden beneath black smoke that looks like a surface. The material of which is different depending on our perception, our own warped reality of the truth that lies below. It’s fine as long as we don’t misstep.

But one graceful stretch to the side, a ballerina’s rotation & extension, disturbs the black smoke just enough to see the roof of buildings, the texture of pavement, a field of lights blurred by our mind’s protective incoherence. It exposes the depth of the reality we fear too much to explore.

The black smoke mists around this extension. The smoke doesn’t disappear, but slowly makes it’s way back home to it’s inky ocean, almost, almost with an audible sigh of relief.

As a Christmas gift to her husband Reno, Sydney reached out to me with a concept - a concept to celebrate both their love & life together, and making it through a year of grief and self growth. 2020 was an unimaginable year for most of us. We’re still processing. But through it comes healing, a greater appreciation for ourselves and others, an appreciation for moments that are greater than ourselves. Breathing life into these images was a challenge gladly accepted. But this story isn’t possible, without the creative minds of Sydney & Reno.

Plague masks were created by HigginsCreek on Etsy.
